What patina actually costs
By Plinth Studio · Sep 2025 · 2 min read

Patina isn't free. It's a different bill, paid differently, over a longer time.
We spec a lot of materials that are sold on the promise of ageing beautifully — raw brass, blackened steel, unsealed oak, lime render. Clients love the idea in a showroom. Fewer love it eighteen months in, when the brass has fingerprints and the steel has started to streak.
None of this is a defect. It's the material doing exactly what it was specified to do. But ‘ages beautifully’ needs an honest conversation up front about what that ageing actually looks like mid-process, not just at either end of the timeline.
The real cost of patina isn't money, usually — it's patience, and a willingness to not intervene. A brass handle wiped down every week never develops the patina it was chosen for. The material needs to be left alone, which is a harder ask than it sounds.
We show clients photos of these materials at six months, not just at twenty years, before they commit. The finished, aged version is beautiful. The middle is where people back out if nobody warned them.
